IEEP Program Options
Customer Options:
The Customer Benefit system component is getting things done "on the ground" at customer facilities. Choices of technologies implemented are determined by consideration of the overall utility landscape, specific load circumstances, specific customer circumstances, and above all, customers. Technologies include:- Industrial Process and Facility Control Installations
- Variable Speed Drives
- Lighting Technology Upgrades
- Installation of proven energy-efficient technologies for farms
- High Efficiency HVAC Incentives
- VIP:Village Insulation Program
- ENERGY STAR® Compact Fluorescent Lighting Program
- Energy-Efficient Low Interest Loans
- ENERGY STAR® Appliance Rebates
System Options
The IEEP System Benefit option focuses on the overall operation of the utility, and specific utility operating circumstances.System Benefit measures focus on the specific needs of the member system operation, and reflects on improving efficiency of multiple customer classes. Technologies include:
- Stand-by Generation
- Street Lighting
- Space Lighting
- Renewable Projects
- Traffic Controllers
- Automatic Meter Reading
- Infrared Scanning Technology
- Athletic Field Lighting
- Customer Information Technology
- System-specific projects
Renewable Options
Renewable energy technologies produce safe and reliable electricity from naturally available, non-polluting resources such as the sun, wind, and others. The underlying goal of the IEEP is to promote smart energy solutions for municipal electric utility customers and New York State. The IEEP is committed to advancing new and existing technologies of all types, with an emphasis on education about, and demonstration of, renewable energies. Technologies include:
- Photovoltaic
- Wind Power
- Alternative-Fueled and Hybrid Vehicles And exploring . . .
- Combined Heat and Power
- Fuel Cells
- Geothermal
- Biomass
The Outcome:
Direct Energy Benefits
The broad base of measures installed by the IEEP demands that evaluation of technologies be calculated individually; e.g., energy savings for individual lighting measures is calculated by "satellite software" in use since the program began, calculating direct energy savings of lighting measures installed.Contemporary software tools provide accurate savings projections using proven methods.Specific energy use information is integral to evaluation; technology and manufacturer-specific information can be calculated by ballast and lamp.
The IEEP estimates hours of use and other variables for each measure.
Environmental Benefits
All IEEP activities are intended to have a positive impact on the environment, incorporating "green" thinking in all program activities. This commitment demonstrates the environmental accountability of IEEP municipal electric utilities, which have a measurable impact on the environment in the form of negawatts: units of energy not produced as a result of program operations.
This IEEP effort has resulted in emissions reductions equivalent to removing an ever-increasing number of vehicles from New York roads.
NonEnergy Benefits
Energy-efficient equipment improvements yield savings associated with both energy and non-energy aspects of a project. In some cases, energy savings may represent only a minor component of overall savings realized.- Resource and other utility savings
- Improved worker safety and perception of the utility
- Reduced production and waste disposal costs
- Improved product quality, reliability and appearance
- Improved capacity utilization and industrial productivity
- Water conservation and waste minimization
- Environmental emission reductions
Economic Benefits
The IEEP continuously invests into New York State economies, allied with more than 100 firms in members' service territories and around the state that support program operation: contracting and electrical firms, plus many retail firms that have specifically been part of the ENERGY STAR® Compact Fluorescent Lighting Program. The IEEP stimulates thinking that positively impacts customer attitudes and relations.
The result is economic stimulation. The untapped nature of the member utilities' franchise territories provides fertile ground for program operation.
